I am trying to figure out the name and artist of some oil paintings I have saved to my computer.?

Is there a way I can paste it somewhere online and have help from others to identify them?I am trying to figure out the name and artist of some oil paintings I have saved to my computer.?
You join a photo-hosting site like photobucket.com, and upload your pictures. Each picture will then be given a URL, which you simply copy %26amp; paste into a question. It will then turn into an active link.I am trying to figure out the name and artist of some oil paintings I have saved to my computer.?
Apart from photobucket (already mentioned), imageshack is another one you could use: http://www.imageshack.us

And there's also ';allyoucanupload';, which I've never used, but seems pretty simple: http://allyoucanupload.webshots.com/

How do I market and sell my original oil paintings?????

I am a local artist native to Austin but I have never tried selling my paintings since I've always painted for the enjoyment. I've had several people tell me I could sell my artwork so I've decided to do a little marketing but I need some help?

How do I market and sell my original oil paintings?????

You can see an example of a few of the paintings I've done on craigslist. I'm also curious to know what one might pay?

I like your work very much. You show a lot of promise. The landscape on the top right is fantastic! You need more feedback on your work and at the same time have it available for interested parties to purchase directly from you at your price. Join ArtWanted and post your work there. 20,000 artists are members and you will get comments on your work and you can name your price. Your stuff will look very good up with all the other artists. http://www.artwanted.com/artist.cfm?ArtI鈥?/a>How do I market and sell my original oil paintings?????
You have a lot of talent. Of course, you know that. I have a BFA and I paint, but ironically, my brother, who has a biology degree and an English degree is the one who is a professional painter. He does very well financially and has worked hard to arrive where he is (financially). The thing is, you have to produce a lot of art in order for the numbers to work in your favor. My suggestion is to paint subject matter for the market and, when you have time, paint other things for yourself. Don't spend too much time on any one painting. ';Crank them out'; and price them so that they are affordable, and have fun. One a day (if you can) and use acrylics (dries faster, easier to clean up, less costly, and is less toxic). Sell your paintings at outdoor art festivals. Lots of traffic. With the talent you have, you could do quite well.
you have to find a agent, and a gallery to display your work , you can try and hold a showing in a hotel or Private show room and invite local people to come see your work , to put you name out there, you can also try putting some pieces on eBay or your own web site and see what kind of response you get and from what kind of people are into work, so you know how to market to.
you could sell them to a gallery. but if you do sell them wholesale so that you get all that they're worth. if you don't you only get like 40% as they sell. or if there are any like festivels or something.
They are very nice...but I am more into desert scenery..I have 15 oils from various local artists and the most I have paid is $150 for a 16x23 oil that I found unique..they incorporated sand in the painting.

Good luck I'm sure you will do well.

As stated before..you could try a festival or local fair that encourages homemade crafts.

  • I have 2 original oil paintings back during WW2. How much do you think they are worth?

There is 1 original oil painting of General Macarthur and then there is another one of President Roosevelt. They were painted by a soldier artist at Fort Meade on army tent canvas. He signed his name, J. Vogelman and the date is March 1943. I can e-mail pics if anyone might have a clue of how much they may be worth.I have 2 original oil paintings back during WW2. sure, send me a copy, i've only seen one pix of his so far, and the navy has it, it J means jack...I have 2 original oil paintings back during WW2. How much do you think they are worth?
nothing .. i can't find nothing on this guy.. i seems that he was a unknown artist. the best way to findout about your paintings is to take your paintings to someone that knows about art or findout when the roadshow is going to be around were you live.
wow...these must be really something. I had an opportunity to visit the MacArthur Museum in Norfolk, VA. and it was quite an experience (he was history in himself for sure). I am not an expert in art, but you may want to contact that museum there in Norfolk and ask them. What a piece of history you! (I'm a veteran, so these are great). Also contact the Smithsonian for advise. How cool was it that they were done on tent canvas!
sure, send me a picture of the paintings, Jonathan vogelman is what I believe his name is, and a student of Flagg's, Flagg was the guy who painted the raising of the american flag at Iwo Jima. The army had several embedded artists who traveled around with dignitaries like Macarthur and Patton, and a few full bird colonels. thye acted as correspondents to washington but in a less active roll than were the photographers who by the way were employed as far back as Custer's days as a major. I'm sure the museum at norfolk would love to see these.
Did a search for J. Vogelman. Actually found a navel painting from 1967 by a J. Vogelman. I doubt if this is your artist.

Below is a link that will direct you to the military museum system. They might know something.

If I had to guess, I would say your paintings aren't worth a lot except to a military collector. And even then not that much.

By the way are they any good?

Oil Paintings - What is the difference between acrylics and oil paintings?

I was looking at buying a painting, from http://www.overstockart.com , I noticed that they use oils in their paintings instead of acrylics, what's the difference, between oils and acrylics? What are the other materials that are used for paintings?Oil Paintings - What is the difference between acrylics and oil paintings?
Oil paint is better. It can also be layered and layered, which is the method the old masters used (i.e. Rembrandt, Da Vince, etc)

It is, as stated, oil based. You cannot mix water with it.

Acrylic is a new plastic paint. You use water to thin and apply it instead of turpetine and other mediums.

Since you are just looking at a finished product, the medium it is painted with doesnt really matter since you don't have to worry about drying time or production time.Oil Paintings - What is the difference between acrylics and oil paintings?
oil is oil based, thinned with turpentine and paint thinners,

acrylics (plastic)are water based thin with water, now half and half

    watercolours are another

    http://painting.about.com/od/allotherpai…
Generally, beginners use acrylics, experts use oil-paints. Acrylics dry quickly, so that u can overpaint ur creation many times, during one session. Oil-paints don't dry at all during one session. If u're interested in buying paint-works, then I'd suggest u to buy oil-paintings, bcoz it looks richer than acrylics (u know what ...it's due to the fact that oil paint vehicles can hold more pigment than can acrylic emulsions). Most companies that manufacture acrylic paints use less pure grades of pigment when making colors such as cadmium red and cadmium yellow. One company, Winsor %26amp; Newton, is now marketing a line of acrylic colors that are made from chemically pure pigments. It uses pure cadmium instead of the cadmium-barium pigment that most other companies use. Now u haven't mentioned what type of artworks u're planning to buy. If it's abstract / perspective then acrylic is good. But if it's portrait or still-life then oil-paints are better.
From my own understanding and experience, oil painting is the old and traditional medium of painting and it takes a while for it to dry hence the term slow-drying paint unless if you apply tempera (egg) technique. And heck, you need to use turpentine and maybe some thinner to dilute it and stuff. As for how it appears, its good when it come to blending, but with a cap H for Hassle and value for money.

And lo and behold, there is acrylic. Acrylic in contrary is a fast-dying paint and it just takes water to dilute it. You can use layers and layers of this paint and still looks fab. Acrylic is like PNG and oil painting is the JPEG of paint.

For more long winded answers you can check out the link below.
Kermit is right! If you like the painting buy it! The medium is academic. Oils is oils and acrylics are different as is watercolour. You should look to see if the artist is doing the medium justice. Some artists do not exploit the full potential of the medium - they use the paint to put colour onto the surface and do not build the work on the basis of the medium's characteristics/unique qualities. Even with the same subject, a good watercolour, or oil or acrylic work should be distinctly different.

Anyone have experience cleaning oil paintings?

I now have one that was done in the 70s and lived until now in a smoke filled home.

Thanks, it was my mom's and I can't really afford to have it done professionally at the moment.Anyone have experience cleaning oil paintings?
Having been a picture restorer, and having had to repair the damage done by inexperienced people trying a little DIY, my advice is to leave well alone. You could easily make a very expensive mistake.

Wait until you can afford to have it done professionally.

Are oil paintings vulnerable to exposure to sunlight?

Should I pick a place without a lot of sunlight to hang paintings? Are oil paintings vulnerable to exposure to sunlight?
Yes the direct sunlight will be harmful to oil painting. The only time an oil painting should be exposed to direct sunlight is when it should be bleached.

That only occurs when the whites are so yellowed that they aren't white anymore. The sun will bleach the whites. The yellowing only occurs in Flake white paints not the newer Titanium whites. Are oil paintings vulnerable to exposure to sunlight?
Never hang art or even reproductions of art in direct sunlight, and keeping them away from bright light is even a good idea. Even archival colorfast pigment will succumb to the damage that UV light can cause.
    The answer is yes.

Although I have heard that if an oil is exposed to light and fades some bringing it back to the shade will sort of restore it.

Not sure if it is true.
All paintings are vulnerable to light. Watercolor more than oils. It is best to hang art where it will not get direct sunlight.

I'm looking for an oil painting of Paris. Hoping to find a website that has a large collection with ability to order online/phone. I figure since I'm looking for something specific I'd have more luck finding a large concentration of that one thing online, rather than at an art gallery. Can anyone help? Thanks :)Where to find oil paintings of Paris?
I would begin my online search with art.com, where you can find links to galleries which DO sell online. Be aware, that what you will see online on art.com ARE prints NOT the actual paintings. But links from there to online galleries should abound. Best of success in finding your oil painting. If I come across other web sites, I'll append to my message here.

The best place to start is Ebay. just put up a few for auction and see what people think. dont sell them expensive though
very difficult to survive only on paintings. in which ever city u r try to get in touch with art galleries, visit when other artists hold exhibitions, judge the crowd and the result before hiring the gallery. and do u have enough painting for the full gallery. or join with other artists and hold a joint show. it is done now adays. also talk with the owner of the gallery and ask honest opinion about your paintings. don't go just by the opinion of relatives and friends
Arrange to exhibit it in any Exhibition
    display it in galary.

or roadside exhibition would b less expensive as well u can earn money.
Giant flea markets sometimes work. Check out your states craft fairs. They should be starting up in the spring and go all through to next fall. Good luck!..:)
have these exhibited in a gallery, giving the price of each painting.
Tag the price, sit on the road with the oil painting you have made and buyers will come to you.
Depends mainly on your style. Landscapeists find the best success in hobby stores/ flea markets. Abstracts will find better success in an urban scene rather than a small town. You can always hire a sales associate to commission your paintings...

Is it a good idea to buy oil paintings reproduction of classical masterpieces?

In what way do you mean 'good idea'? It will give you access to easily view something you might not otherwise be able to view. It will be cheaper than the original. It will likely be available, whereas the original will likely not even be for sale.

A reproduction will not be exactly the same as viewing the original. It will not be of any value for resale purposes.

If you enjoy the piece and want it to hang on the wall of your home, then yes, it's probably a 'good idea' to buy a reproduction. Is it a good idea to buy oil paintings reproduction of classical masterpieces?
As an artist and respectful of other artists I have COPIES. I suggest it matters very little if you like a piece, unless you can truly afford the original and it happens to be available,,,IE: Van Gogh one of my faves/ Sunflowers, now in a Japanese, financial institution I believe, at a cost of 2.5 million. I can buy a repro for quite a bit less,,,AND still enjoy it

Go and research through Artcycpedia to see if there are any paintings in there that are similar to the ones you have. Then from there you should be able to go to an Art Museum and find out what they are worth. If they are not in Artcycpedia more than likely it was just someone who painted, in which case you would have to pay an art apprasier to tell you what they are worth. Good Luck, Send me some pic maybe I can help!
Look for the signature of the artist. If you can not identify an artist, and you have no chain of ownership (like, grandpa bought them from the artist, or a paperwork chain back to the artist), then the only value is if someone likes them as decoration.

You are unlikely to get much more than the value of the materials and frame.

What's the safest way to transport oil paintings which were painted within last two months?

If your paintings are still too tacky to varnish, use a ';Retouch Varnish'; to reduce tack and protect the surface somewhat. You can varnish over this when the paintings have cured.

The paintings should be crated, here's an easy way; wood or sturdy cardboard triangles are screwed into the bars on the back that extend beyond the edge of the painting. The painting is placed inside a sturdy carton larger and deeper than the painting, and the extended corners are attached to the carton on one side using small bolt %26amp; nut or even silicon glue. This way the carton doesn't touch the painting surface. For larger paintings, a wood carton is recommended.

  • What is Alla Prima technique for oil paintings?

It is a name called Alla Prima for oil paintings, it is a fast painting technique, what is it exactly? What is Alla Prima technique for oil paintings?
It's painting right on to the canvas outdoors usually, it can be done in a studio setting as well.

The impressionist's used it outdoors and with it came a spontaneity that you can't get with a studio painting.

Alla Prima is basically taking the oil straight from the tube and applying it to the canvas and pretty well mixing your colours on the canvas as you work the painting. It is usually thick in application but can be worked thin. What is Alla Prima technique for oil paintings?
A La Prima means painting directly onto the canvas without using a drawing or underpainting, using paint straight from the tube without mixing any medium with the paint. This means the painting is done in one sitting, with only one layer of paint. The word Prima means ';first';.

The term for outdoor painting is Plein Air - the techniques can be combined but are not necessarily the same thing.

I have a bunch of unfinished oil paintings. Can I finish them in acrylic?

I don't like oil anymore because it takes sooo long to dry. Will it be okay if I finish the oil paintings in acrylic paint? Will the water-based paint do something weird to the oil-based?I have a bunch of unfinished oil paintings. Can I finish them in acrylic?
Go to your closest art supply store and buy a small bottle of Gamblin's Galkyd medium, to enhance drying time. It works wonders. I like the Titanium white color so use the Gamblin Titanium Zinc because the Zinc makes the drying time far less. I like the texture better too, so it's a win win situation. Personally I don't care for acrylic colors as much but it's up to you. To me acrylic greens look fake but then I am hooked on oil or watercolors. For clean up I use dishes liquid soap after I gently run it through the Gamisol first to cut the major parts of the oil paint off. Mine don't take that long to dry in this weather anyway. Do what you enjoy, that is best.

Which product can I use to make my oil paintings very shiny?

I need to give my oil paintings that really shiny/oily/glossy effect. does anyone know which products I can use?Which product can I use to make my oil paintings very shiny?
Damar Varnish is what you want to use. Damar is a natural resin and the varnish is prepared by dissolving it in turpentine. You can buy it ready to brush on or in an aerosol can to spray on.

Make sure your paint is completely cured, at least 6 months.

Linseed oil will simply cure to a gooey mess. Damar has been used for many years and was developed for protecting oil painted surfaces.Which product can I use to make my oil paintings very shiny?
I have been oil painting for over 20 years, and the effect you are seeking I apply to my paintings. Damar Varnish or Linseed Oils are best used to give your painting a glossy effect.

    Application:

There are two ways I usually apply the varnish or oil to the painting.

    Method1.

I incorporate the application of turpentine and linseed oil to the brush I am going to be painting the painting with before loading it with paint. This allows the paint to loosen and thin with out losing it's body or hue. When applied to the canvas it helps in blending and drying time is manageable, plus it allow you to move the canvas about because the linseed oil and varnish will protect it.

The second method is to complete the painting and then with a separate brush something like one inch apply the varnish to the painting once it has dried. Usually it will take 2 or 3 weeks before an oil painting is ready for varnishing.

The Method1 maybe better because it allow the painting to dry while working. Plus you can add varnish to it once you finished method 1.

    Don't:

Do not apply too much varnish to your painting once it has dried. It will cause your colors to dull you whites will become yellow or lumps will form if the varnish is not applied with thin coats.

Try Linseed oil. It's almost like an oil based polyurethane for paintings. You can use it to mix with your paints as you work, or you can coat the surface of a finished piece. Very shiny. From my past experiences with it, you don't need much. I'd do a test run with it on an un-liked piece first to see if this is the effect that your looking for.

    Hope this helps

    Kimberly
    Hi,

Raymond gave a good answer (I wonder why someone gave him a thumbs down).

I also use damar. Of course that no varnish is perfect and damar tends to yellow a bit with age, but it's removable and once in a while a bit of light helps oil paints recover their aspect.

But lets talk about the linseed oil (nothing to do with polyurethanes which I sell) used as varnish. Lets suppose that you used linseed oil in your painting (the most common thing) and when you varnished your painting with linseed oil something bad has happened and now you have to remove that oil.

So, you need a solvent to remove THAT oil which, unfortunately, is the same used with your paint. Are you guessing what may happen ?

That's why a varnish should be of a different chemistry of the binder used in the painting.

    Kind regards,

    Jos茅http://theartinquirer.blogspot.com

What is the best way to store original oil paintings. They will be packed for six months in a storage unit?

    Hang it on the wall.

No matter what else you do, but especially if you hide it, it WILL get wrecked in storage.

At the Aviation Museum in Ottawa, there is a airplane which was put into storage in mint condition. Not a mark on it.

You have to see what came out of storage. Definitely NOT in flying condition.

Seriously, get a professional mover to pack it and call your local museum for references.

Talk to the professional packer about HIS insurance policy.

I don't know if this is the best way but this is what I do with my oil paintings.. Wrap them in Wax Paper and store them in a small walk in cooler. • Can oil paintings be put behind glass?

I just painted an oil painting and I want to frame it and possibly put it behind glass with the frame. Is it ok to put it behind glass, or will it have some weird effect on it...?Can oil paintings be put behind glass?
Put shims between the glass and the painting edge it will hold the glass off the canvas regardless of degree of impasto. Can oil paintings be put behind glass?
As long as the oil painting dries full first, and your glass doesn't press contact the painting, it should be fine. Depending on how thick the oil is on the canvas if you have the glass pressing upon the painting, it may smudge/push the paint on the canvas and distort the image.
Make sure the painting does not touch the glass at all. I was told in art school it can take 50+ years for a painting in oils to cure fully
    you should be fine ......

    Hi,

Like you, I also paint and although I'm answering to help you, I'm your competitor. My objective is to paint and market my art better than you.

However, sharing knowledge is also learning. We learn with each other.

To develope one's skills, there's study and practice. One also needs to have the work criticized by fellow artists. They will point the strenghts and weaknesses of our works and will help us through our development as artists.

As always, I advise you to take a look at http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums.

Oil paintings reproduced in print form, best quality?

I've tried many ways to copy my oil paintings into print form, with minor success. A format camera was suggested?Oil paintings reproduced in print form, best quality?
Some of my friends who are painters have asked me to photograph their paintings for the exact same reason you are wanting to photograph your paintings.

Because my friends are usually going to print really large, poster size and above I use a ';large format'; view camera http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/View_camera using what is refered to as chrome or slide film. In particular I use Fujifilm Velvia 100 because of its fine grain and accurate color reproduction http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Velvia. As for the format of the film I use, I use 4x5. When you are reproducing paintings you want to use a camera which yields the largest negative possible(there are cameras which make 8x10 negatives, but I don't have access to an 8x10), and use a camera which is able to correct for parralax which does come into play when you are photographing really large paintings.

Regarding the lighting, this really depends upon how textured the image is. However, in general what I do if the painting isn't overtextured with things like wax, and gobs of paint I use sort of a standard copystand technique except on a larger scale and horizontal with two equally balanced strobe lights fitted with large softboxes on either side of the painting http://www.marietta.edu/~mcshaffd/macro/鈥?/a> Like I had mentioned this technique works well if you don't have too much texture, but it your painiting does have a lot of texture then what you want to do is to move one of the lights in close and sort of strafe the edge of the painting so as to create shadows and deliniate the textures. Anyhow, I know this probably all sounds foreign but to be honest this is the only way I know to accurately reproduce a painting photographically. However, it really isn't all that hard to learn how to photograph your paintings, more than anything it is getting access to the equiptment, which if you live in a major metropolitain area is available for rent at large professional photo stores.Oil paintings reproduced in print form, best quality?
I've done this many, many times using diffuse outdoor light on an overcast day. Do not use a flash. Shade the picture, if there are any glare spots evident. Use Auto White Balance or the shady setting.

A soft box, as suggested by Shelly above, also works, if you can fit the painting in the box. I like the simplest way possible, though, and that's as I described.
    http://www.photoartomation.com/
If I understand your question correctly, you are asking to output your oil painting (on canvas, I presume) onto photo paper. If this is the case, then use an E6 to photograph your oil painting with appropriate lighting (a soft-box works) which will capture the richness in the colors of the paint. You can then process this film at a photo lab where they can also print your choice of frame. Hope this helps!

    Rating guides:

An artist's rating derives from the results of sales in national or international auction sales. When time passes and works ';circulate'; the artist's rating becomes a reliable criteria.

What kind of medium should I use for my Oil paintings?

Just wondering what kind of medium I should be using to thin out the paint on my oil paintings. Thanks =]What kind of medium should I use for my Oil paintings?
i like Liquin or linseed oilWhat kind of medium should I use for my Oil paintings?
hello there.....well i always use a 55% mineral spirits and 45% stand oil, with my oil paint, it has a good consistency.

but i recommend you get, a book called the artist handbook, it's about 30 dollars but has many recipes,

you can find that alot of people just have personal preference to different mediums....for example if you like to paint really thick you can use dorland's wax medium or impasto for a very textures look...:) enjoy
i've used paint thinner in the past, but i think turpentine works best.
you ont have to use any medium at all if you dont want......but some good ones to always keep for diferent effects in whatever paintings you want them in. they are (in order of importance) odorless paint thinner (to make thin paint washes and to clean brushes), linseed oil (any type will work), drying oil ( to make paint dry faster), poppy seed oil, and liquin detail medium

What is the symbol of a peeled lemon with the skin hanging down, used in oil paintings, still life's?

Does anyone know what the meaning of a peeled lemon was when it was used in oil paintings? Basically, what is the symbol? What is the symbol of a peeled lemon with the skin hanging down, used in oil paintings, still life's?
    Hi,

    This is a fascinating subject.

Keep in mind that different societies use symbolic objects in different ways. And one must always be cautious not to be too categorical when attributing ';meanings';. Everything depends on the whole of the composition, on the provenance of the painting, on who commissioned it and on why.

Peeled lemons were quite popular in paintings done in the XVIth century in the Netherlands. If this is the case of the work you are considering this link might help:

    http://www.louvre.fr/llv/oeuvres/detail_鈥?/a>

It reads a peeled lemon as a possible symbol of the passage of time.

Prior to that lemons and oranges were used mainly as status symbols, as they were extremely expensive fruits to have in Central and Northern countries. What is the symbol of a peeled lemon with the skin hanging down, used in oil paintings, still life's?
Interesting question! I've googled 'symbolism in medieval art' and found that the lemon (or lemon tree) is a symbol of fidelity in love, but I couldn't find out anything about a peeled one. I have a horrible feeling it may mean the opposite! Or, of course, it could mean that it is ready to be squeezed!

50 dollar because Money means nothing when u are expressing yourselve in a piece of paper
it all depends on who painted it and how well i think it is done because everyone has different tastes and some people would nt pay a single dime for a painting while others would pay a fortune

$20, LOL. sorry, I'm an artist too, which means....not much money in the bank. :(

You could go to deviantart.com and set up a print account..I believe you can also sell originals.

Pricing is not an easy task...it depends on the market where you're selling, your ability, size of the painting, etc...

P.s. Try to get your art in a gallery, and even alternative ';galleries'; like coffee shops, stores, hospitals. Enter local competitions..the more people that see your work, the better. Good luck! :)

How do I clean oil paintings from the 1920s-1930s?

They were painted in Denmark and displayed under normal living room conditions in Copenhagen all their lives. The bright pure colors on some have darkened. Some of them are quite spontaneous and unfinished so you can see parts of the white canvas. Some may have been protected with a varnish. Also, I'm not sure whether some are acrylic. They range in size from 2 x 3 ft to 3 x 5 ft and are largely sentimental in value. How do I clean oil paintings from the 1920s-1930s?
Even though they are not valuable in the monetary sense, it would serve you better to have a professional clean them. I would contact art galleries and museums to ask for contact info for art restorers. And, who knows, they may be more valuable than you think. How do I clean oil paintings from the 1920s-1930s?

on either cool or hot settings i can image cool would work

any experience?Do blowdryers really work to dry oil paintings?
Not with oil paintings. Oil paint does not dry through heat or evaporation. It oxidizes.

Blow driers are often used to dry watercolor paintings.Do blowdryers really work to dry oil paintings?
As said below oils dry from the inside out. That is why they take so long to dry. So no it will not help. You can add drying agents to the paint that speeds up the drying process.

Oil Paintings: How much should I charge per commission?

Just wondering if anyone had any advice on this:

I'm a student at an art college, and I'm pretty good at painting with oils. I painted for my mom a 9x9'; canvas of my cat. She showed it to her friends, who thought it was awesome, and now they all want one of their pet!

I've been looking online and see prices of anywhere from $150 to $300 for a small oil painting. I don't want to rip anyone off, but some of my friends say I'm just being modest. Any suggestions?Oil Paintings: How much should I charge per commission?
While still an art student, a price of $150 to $300 is reasonable. Remember, you only want your prices to increase through out your career, so don't start too high!Oil Paintings: How much should I charge per commission?
Work out how long the painting going to take you to do and the cost of the supplies then work out what you would consider a good hourly rate….what your doing is more craft then “fine art” and as such an hourly rate is more applicable then a fixed fee……and explain the costing to the customer in advance to they appreciate why you are charging what you are.

I do oil paintings. How do I get prints made so that I can sell the prints but keep the paintings?

My paintings are like family, but people want to buy them I wouldn't mind selling prints, but I don't know who to go to, to get prints made.I do oil paintings. How do I get prints made so that I can sell the prints but keep the paintings?
Use the yellow pages to find a professional printing service in your area. Find one that specialises in the type of work you want done. You will want them to be able to copy your pictures and transfer the images to your choice of support ( paper, canvas etc..). Do not go to any regular photographer for a photograph copy unless this is what you want.

The printing service, if they use up-to-date methods, will scan your paintings digitally and record the scan on a disc. In future additional prints can be made without scanning again.

From the disc the printer will transfer the image to a canvas using a printer designed for this purpose. It is similar to the ink printers used with computers and prints in much the same fashion but with a lot more color choice etc. This is known as ';giclee'; and, the result will be indistinguishable from the original. When the technician takes the first prints after setting the machine up you will be called in to examine the copy against the original and either accept it for final printing or make corrections as you see fit.

Final printing can be done on canvas (stretched or not -- your choice) and makes a real nice job. Or you can simply have it lithographed on a different surface like paper.

You get to keep the original and sell the prints. Also, you could have the images made into business cards, Christmas and other greeting cards and so on. Some people do well selling them in gift shops for example. You get to keep the disc so you can do as you please with it.

This is not a cheap process and it pays to have a sale for the print before you have it copied so the cost can be picked up by the buyer -- unless you're giving it as a gift.

Remember, these are professional technicians trained to do this kind of job and done well looks great.

I do oil paintings. How do I get prints made so that I can sell the prints but keep the paintings?
Find someone who does Giclee prints. Follow their advice on getting scans of your work. It is important to get an excellent scan from which to do top quality prints.

It is a really awesome method for professional artists to get archival prints of their work, on paper or canvas, that are almost indistinguishable from the original if they are done correctly. The advantages over lithography are that you don't have to do a large number at once, and they are much more fade resistant.
Suggest you get a photographer to take pics of them, and process them... you should have plenty to choose from. He can make up your prints, or you can take them to get them done.. ALSO, ask any local ';Art Frame'; place, they might have the contacts, equipment, or more suggestions for you. Make sure it is signed, so no one else can copy em.... Also, you can ask any local college Instructor that teaches Photography, you might get it done 'expertly' and for free, letting the class work on it for a project, or a student, can't hurt them, just taking a picture.. AGAIN, make sure they are signed!
I took my 8x10's to the copy shop and made color copies. Once matted and framed they look great, and make great gifts.

What material or method works best for storing and/or shipping acrylic/oil paintings?

I need to ship and store acrylic and oil paintings. I have noticed that the paint from the acrylic at least transfers onto the plastic. I would like to know if there is a better way and/or anything I can use to avoid this from happening. What material or method works best for storing and/or shipping acrylic/oil paintings?
For my acrylic paintings, my art dealer uses a collar of corregated cardboad wrapped around the edge. You can buy rolls of cardboard, cut strips that will be a couple of inches wider than the thickness of the painting itself. Wrap the painting's edge and staple the two ends together, then using packing tape, wrap the whole painting in the cardboard collar in plastic, also available in rolls from moving supply places and home depot. The plastic is raised above the surface of the painting and the collars rest ontop of one another when they are shipped. This will also work for oil paintings because they can scrape together. What material or method works best for storing and/or shipping acrylic/oil paintings?
a thick layer of sponge but you can send it as fragile...

usually you just put it in a roll and in a tube ....but if you painted on a ready on canvas....

    sponge is best..

How canI clean discolored oil paintings?

The paintings have a lot of white paint which have turned yellow due to cigarette smoke.

How do I remove the yellow? How canI clean discolored oil paintings?
ugh, i hate when this happens to a poor oil painting. well sometimes distilled water on a disinfectent wiper will due. but u need to make sure this happened because of cigarette smoke. i know oil paint also yellows because of an old varnish that needs to be removed and another varnish needs to be re applied. another problem that can occour with yellowing is that the painting has been in the dark too long. to fix this, just expose it to sunlight. but this is only for fresh oil paintings, like painted 6months- 1year ago.

but please, put it some where else instead of the smoking room. How canI clean discolored oil paintings?
I would use distilled water on a clean white soft cloth and gently daub it. Perhaps, if that does not work, you may want to use some very gentle soap followed by a distilled water daubing..
You might try a lite amount of soap (like Dawn)and water on a sponge at first as long as there isn't paint sticking out of the surface of the painting. Otherwise I think it would be best not to try it yourself, but rather take it to an art dealer who no doubt could tell you where and to whom you could take it to be professionally cleaned. Whatever you do don't try any turpintine or chemical solvents until you've talked to a professional art curator either at a museum or art framing store. You could end up destroying the painting which isn't what you want to do I'm sure
Be sure the painting is a varnished painting before doing this. If the varnish is cracked you should think twice about using anything on the painting.

Grate a raw potato and gently rub it over the painting. There should be a light froth but no more. Remove as soon as it gets brown and redo with clean potato grating.

    IMPORTANT!!:work from the bottom up.

Leave it on the painting just for a minute and remove with very little water at a time again from the bottom up.

If that does not help (enough) the varnish is tainted and should be replaced by somebody that knows what he/she is doing.
You can go online and find the proper way to clean an oil painting, but I strongly suggest that you take it to a professional as there are many steps to the process and it is easy to mess up if you are not sure of what you are doing. If you do attempt to clean the painting yourself, make sure you follow each step carefully and do not skip or take any shortcuts. Oil can be pretty tricky to clean whereas acrylic is soap and water cleaning. Good luck.
if it is discoloured you must restore it... the only white that does not yellow in time is silver white, now banned. it is possible the actual oil paint changed colour.

I have an oil painting of a european street scene. It is signed Zola. I am trying to find out something about the artist. Help!Do you have any oil paintings signed Zola?
    Was it Emile Zola?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%89mile_鈥?/a>

Born in Paris, the son of an Italian engineer, 脡mile Zola spent his childhood in Aix-en-Provence and was educated at the Coll猫ge Bourbon (now called College Mignet). At age 18 he returned to Paris where he studied at the Lyc茅e Saint-Louis. After working at several low-level clerical jobs, he began to write a literary column for a newspaper. Controversial from the beginning, he did not hide his disdain for Napoleon III, who used the Second Republic as a vehicle to become Emperor.

More than half of Zola's novels were part of a set of 20 collectively known as Les Rougon-Macquart. Set in France's Second Empire, the series traces the 'hereditary' influence of violence, alcoholism, and prostitution in two branches of a single family: the respectable (that is, legitimate) Rougons and the disreputable (illegitimate) Macquarts, for five generations.

    As he described his plans for the series, ';I want to portray, at the outset of a century of liberty and truth, a family that cannot restrain itself in its rush to possess all the good things that progress is making available and is derailed by its own momentum, the fatal convulsions that accompany the birth of a new world.';

Zola and the painter Paul C茅zanne were friends from childhood and in youth, but broke in later life over Zola's fictionalized depiction of C茅zanne and the bohemian life of painters in his novel L'艗uvre (The Masterpiece, 1886).

L'Aurore's front page on 13 January 1898 features 脡mile Zola's open letter to the French President F茅lix Faure regarding the Dreyfus Affair.

He risked his career and even his life on 13 January 1898, when his ';J'accuse'; (see [1] and[2]) was published on the front page of the Paris daily, L'Aurore. The paper was run by Ernest Vaughan and Georges Clemenceau, who decided that the controversial story would be in the form of an open letter to the President, F茅lix Faure. ';J'accuse'; accused the French government of anti-Semitism and of wrongfully placing Alfred Dreyfus in jail. Zola was brought to trial for libel on 7 February 1898, and was convicted on 23 February. Zola declared that the conviction and transportation to Devil's Island of the Jewish army captain Alfred Dreyfus came after a false accusation of espionage and was a miscarriage of justice. The case, known as the Dreyfus affair, had divided France deeply between the reactionary army and church and the more liberal commercial society. The ramifications continued for years, so much so that on the 100th anniversary of 脡mile Zola's article, France's Roman Catholic daily paper, La Croix, apologized for its anti-Semitic editorials during the Dreyfus Affair.

Zola was a leading light of France and his letter formed a major turning-point in the Dreyfus affair, causing the captain's case to be reopened, whereupon he was acquitted. In the course of events, Zola was convicted of libel, sentenced, and removed from the Legion of Honor. Rather than go to jail, he fled to England. Soon he was allowed to return in time to see the government fall. Dreyfus was convicted again, but was ultimately freed, in large part due to the moral force of Zola's arguments. Zola said, ';The truth is on the march, and nothing shall stop it.'; In 1906, Dreyfus was completely exonerated by the Supreme Court.

(Decades later, a Parisian roofer claimed on his deathbed to have closed the chimney for political reasons.[1]) He was initially buried in the Cimeti猫re de Montmartre in Paris, but on 4 June 1908, almost six years after his death, his remains were moved to the Panth茅on.

How do I make my own website to sell my oil paintings?

I would like to put my oil paints out where the whole world can see them. How do I make my own website to sell my oil paintings?
To make your own website, you first need to find a company to host your website. A few examples are listed below:

    http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/webhostin鈥?/a>

    http://www.dotanything.net

    http://www.godaddy.com

All of those require payment, but give excellent service as well as a great amount of space and monthly transfer. There are others that are free, but give less space and fewer services. Examples are listed below:

    http://geocities.yahoo.com

    http://pagecreator.google.com

If you use Geocities or Pagecreator, they come with easy to use web creation software packages, for free. If you choose one of the other ones that I listed, you will probably need a basic knowledge of HTML, the language that web developers use to create web pages. It is very simple and one or two online tutorials plus a library book should be plenty to get you started. Then, you can either get a free HTML editing program, like PageBreeze, or you can pay a couple hundred dollars for an amazing top-of-the-line HTML editor called Adobe Dreamweaver 8 (available at http://www.adobe.com). Then, all you need to do is create your page, and post it! For more details on how to create and post your page, you may need to consult your website host and your HTML editor (unless you used Geocities or Google PageCreator).

Hope this helps, and good luck with your websites and oil painting!

--rbedi100How do I make my own website to sell my oil paintings?
It depends on how much you want to put into the site.

You can create a fairly static site which hosts just the work and some other information and requires interested parties to contact you for purchase information. Or you can make a completly electronic site where they can browse your ';catalog'; and make purchases on-line.

Of course, the more functionality the site contains, the more you'll have to pay for it.

Have a look at thie site below I created for my father for his art work. It took me about a day or two to create that and I've made some minor updates.

A domain name would cost you about $5/year and a basic hosting service is about $6/month. Of course, hosting costs go up for additional functionality.

If you want more info, send me an email. (No, I'm not selling anything - just offering advice.) Use the webmaster email address at the above site .

Looking for info on a couple of antique oil paintings?

I have two oil paintings that my dad picked up overseas about 50 years ago while in the military. One of them is a scene in Venice with a gondoleer under a walkway. Only the driver is in the boat. The second is of the colosseum and shows two men on horseback on a dirt road in the foreground. The paintings are by the same artist, but are unsigned. Anyone know where I can get info on these?Looking for info on a couple of antique oil paintings?

Many oil paintings transition a background form yellow to blue (in sky) . How is this done.?

Yellow and blue want to become green of course. Does one have to wait for one of the colors to dry before painting in the other? Many oil paintings transition a background form yellow to blue (in sky) . How is this done.?
    One option: Glazing.

You first make a grey gradient. Light grey on the horizon fading to white in the top. On that you glaze your blue from the top fading down to the grey. Now you glaze the yellow from the horizon to the blue. It should not look green and almost 'lifelike'.

And yes. With Glazing you wait for every layer to be dry.

How can I make my acrylic paintings have more of the warmth and glow that oil paintings have?

Because of my living conditions, I cannot use oils, but I miss the beautiful glow that oil painting seem to have naturally. Please share any suggestions. How can I make my acrylic paintings have more of the warmth and glow that oil paintings have?
The best way I have found is to have a really warm-colored underpainting and to use lots of acrylic medium and paint many layers. It doesn't look as good as oils, naturally, but it at least has less of that flatness of acrylics. Also, I love to paint on rice paper - it seems to make the color pop. Not in the way oils do, but it looks interesting. How can I make my acrylic paintings have more of the warmth and glow that oil paintings have?
You should think about how you used oil paints very specifically. Glaze mediums, Matte mediums, and textural mediums correspond somewhat to the effects of linseed, stand, poppy, and safflower oil. Try using a gloss medium for a stand oil type effect
You are so right! Acrylic always leaves me cold. I feel sorry you cannot use your oils ; I would have to change the way I paint completely if I was forced to use acrylics. You'll never get the warmth you are talking about using acrylics so you might want to consider a new style of painting using the qualities that the new medium offers. There are good acrylic paintings but in my opinion they are rare.
You might want to try water-soluble oils. I have not tried them myself, but I hear that they act just like oils, but without the smell. You can use water to thin the paint and wash your brushed. I'm not sure what kind of meduim you would use with them.

They might be the ';best of both worlds'; for you.

  • How can i best sell original oil paintings created by my father?

Hi everyone, im looking at ways to sell my dads artwork as he is low on money at the moment and has 6 paintings that he has created himself - ebay comes to mind but after looking on there i found that they are sellling for way too cheap, he needs atleast 拢100 per painting. How can i best sell original oil paintings created by my father?
Consult a local art dealer, in fact consult several and get the best price from them.If they do not personally want them they can guide you to a salesroom that will auction them. Good luck. How can i best sell original oil paintings created by my father?
You should be able to get at least that much for an oil painting, even by an unknown, if they are GOOD.

Unfortunately there's not much hope of selling things like that quickly. You might luck into a gallery that will take them, or you might not. You should investigate art fairs, shows put on by your local art or painting society, etc. Also, every so often you'll run across a restaurant or coffee shop that has art by local artists for sale on its walls.

What the heck. Put them on EBAY and set a reserve price which would also cover estimated shipping.
Art does find its own level of price. If your Dad's paintings are very good they will sell for very good money, where ever you offer them. I would not , though, put them on ebay as buyers like to examine them closely. Offer them in a local exhibition - amateur or otherwise. A gallery will take at least 40% of the selling price
why dont you get in touch with a local gallery and get some advice from them. they may even be able to sell them for you.i dont know where you are but there are a lot of gallerries down in cornwall. its worth a try ..good luck
First you need an opinion of their value. Try your local auction, fine art auction if you have one. Without knowing the subject and style it is hard to help. Did he exibit with a local art group. What part of the country are you in. We have an

'; art on the railings '; scheme where we can sell our work outdoors on summer Saturdays. Don't take less than 拢100 for anything framed.
take his work to an art gallery nearby, have it evaluated. any good art dealer can give you an idea of its worth.

one at a time - as needed.

reletively cheap - no need to buy 10 or 100Who can i get to make prints of my oil paintings for resale?
I don't know of any good companies in your area but I do know that you are going commercial.

Whoever you get do not expect any service. In the market you are always looking for three things. Good price, quality work, and great service. You are not going to get all three. You can expect two out of three, but not all three.

If you want quality of work with great service? Then you are going to pay for it. If you want a cheap price and above average service then don't expect any quality. You want a cheap price, with quality work. So expect to do a lot of the footwork yourself, and don't expect them to jump for you. Expect delays and expect the printing project to take more time than average.

The highest cost you are going to come up against is the film work for the plates. That is colour separation. This involves four films, for four different colours , amber, magenta, cyan, and black. (we know black is not a colour, but in printing for economic reasons it is considered a colour). Then the print itself has to be run through the press four times. All of this is taken into consideration when pricing is quoted. Expect a high price to do four colour processing.

The stock is another thing. If you want the work's reproduction to be of a high quality? Then don't cheap out on the stock. Printers will have a 10% clause on all their jobs. This means if you order one thousand and only get nine hundred then it is acceptable by law. A printer will put one thousand one hundred sheets through to cover for printing mistakes in alignment on the presses. If the printer is really good you could end up with more than a thousand.

So you want a good company to do cheap and quality work ... you have to do a lot of the footwork yourself.

Run around with the phone and make inquiries, then do a lot of footwork checking out the companies. Make a short list of who you think you can deal with then set up meetings with whomever is in charge. See what kind of footwork you can do for them to bring the price down, and don't expect them to do any extras for you. Expect a good job. But if you aren't paying top dollar ...don't expect any service.
Get a copy of an art trade magazine like ';American Artist'; or ';Artist's Magazine'; and check out the ad section. Contact some of the people that do giclees - prints of your art on canvas. If you want to add some real paint over the prints to give it texture you can get an even higher price for repros. Prices vary, but it is a starting point. Don't forget to get a copyright.
take a photo of it and then upload to www.deviantart.com--they offer an option to sell prints of your work there.
    what about staples or kinkos?
The hottest selling respectable art right now is the giclee reproduction on canvas.Take a very high quality digital photo of the painting and upload it in the highest resolution and file size possible. This will only work if the painting is a standard size. Mail the CD (the file will be too large to transfer via internet) to a website like winkflash.com or take it to a giclee printer in your area. Check with your printer on the format they prefer (jpeg, tif, etc). They can transfer the photo on canvas in a variety of sizes, allowing the art patron a variety of prices to choose from. I've seen large paintings, 18'; X24'; go for a bargain price of $100. Cost to artist, about $50.

Is retouching varnish acceptable as a permanent varnish on oil paintings?

I bought some retouching varnish to protect my paintings before I put on a final coat of varnish, but - is that really necessary? Is the retouching varnish perfectly acceptable as my final varnish? If so, why does anyone use anything else, given that you have to wait 6 months to varnish your painting? Is retouching varnish acceptable as a permanent varnish on oil paintings?
This is a VERY, very, good question. The reason being, many of us who paint in oil are either doing a commissioned work or are painting it in the hopes that it will SELL at the next show. It is best to keep in touch with the buyer (especially in the case of commissioned portraits) and return in 6 to 12 months when the paint has ';cured'; to apply a coat of genuine picture varnish to protect it against scratches and UV damage. BUT what if you sell at shows or a buyer takes the painting across the country and you will never see it again? I give my finished works a blast of spray on retouch varnish and let it dry. I tell the buyer to contact me in 6 months or so if they are local and I go and apply a coat of final varnish free of charge as part of my customer service. If they live far away I tell them that it would be wise to contact a local artist or art school and have them apply a coat of varnish. If they don't care enough to follow through I let the cards fall where they may and wish my artwork ';well met and farewell';...nothing lasts forever. Is retouching varnish acceptable as a permanent varnish on oil paintings?
You should only use retouch varnish if you're planning on repainting over a previously painted canvas. Personally I'm not a fan of spaying down paintings with varnish for any reason. Plus...It has the tendency to add a yellow glaze over top the painting after many years. Not pretty.

Handling gold leaf will destroy it.

Cheapest way is to 're-leaf' it but that is not an option if there is any historic value to it.

How can I get smoke tar off of oil paintings?

I have a painting (and also a print) that were exposed to decades of heavy smoking (3 non-stop smokers in the home). Can they be cleaned and can I do it or does it need to be done professionally? Where would I find a professional that does this? How can I get smoke tar off of oil paintings?
As a former picture-restorer I wouldn't suggest that you try and clean it yourself, soapy water is not a good idea.

Look in the telephone directory for picture-restorers in your area, or ask in the nearest municipal gallery for anyone they could recommend. It's not cheap but it could cost you a great deal more to have an amateur job repaired.

PS. Ammonia is very corrosive and will easily dissolve a paint surface. How can I get smoke tar off of oil paintings?
I'd take it in to be cleaned professionally. Depending on the value of the painting, you might feel comfortable taking some soap to it, but my guess is that even if you try you won't be able to cut through those years of grime and tar (which is killer to clean up anywhere!) the way a professional would. Look for independent frame shops in your area; some do restoration work and they should be able to point you in the right direction even if they don't.

The print will likely be a lot harder to clean as paper (unlike dried oil paint) is damaged by almost anything that touches it! Steam might get out some of the grime, but for that one DEFINITELY leave it up to a professional.

    Good luck!

Just use warm soapy water and a light brush and use a swirling motion . Then sponge it dry to get rid of soap. It is an oil painting so water won't hurt it. I am not saying to submerge it in water or anything like that use a little soap and water . I would not use chemicals of any kind on it .

What type of paint brush should i use for oil paintings?

I just bought some oil paintings and i bought a set of like 20 paint brush's but they all got ruined and the oil paint wouldn't come off and dried on it so i couldn't use them anymore.

What type of brush's should i use? What type of paint brush should i use for oil paintings?
Bristle brushes are the best for oil or acrylic because they are a bit stiff. Since these paints are thick and need to be 'pushed' as opposed to water color brushes which are softer and more absorbent because you need more of a 'flow' with the paint.

Hog bristle is the most common and synthetic bristle is good too. Sable is a bit soft for most oil painting but can be used for detail. They also can get very expensive.

Buy the best you can afford and keep them clean and they will last a long time. What type of paint brush should i use for oil paintings?
The package that the brushes come in usually say what medium they are appropriate for. but the key to keeping brushes for any length of time is to clean them well and store them either upright or laying down without anything on them to distort the natural lay of the brush hairs.
you should use sable brushes and clean right after you use them they will last for years I have some brushes I got in 1980's and just as good now they cost a little more but are so worth it
I like the real hair ones If you use mineral spirits and dawn dish soap on them you can save some of your brushes

Thank you! What is the best way to sell my Oil Paintings?
When somebody wants to buy your work they do so because of what they like in that work.

There麓s no such thing as a ';License To Paint';. ;-)

You don麓t need a degree in Fine Arts. That麓s more a thing for the people who will eventually professionally praise or criticize your work.

Although a education in that field can broaden your knowledge and techniques. But it hasn麓t have to be a degree.

Primary here is talent. What is the best way to sell my Oil Paintings?
take a pic and post it.
Easy. Just paint things people want, like crying clowns. It helps if you paint on black velvet.
My work is collected internationally and I鈥檓 published by a mega publication house. I don鈥檛 have any qualifications. First thing is to find galleries that could sell your kind of work in your kind of price range. Then be prepared to be repetitive for them. (I know this sounds horrible but galleries always want another one of what sold last. You can keep your own best/serious work for you - consider the rest commercial work for sale.) Say you are 鈥榮elf taught鈥? In my experience people have loved to hear that. It always depends on the quality of your work, though. Good luck!!!

You should always experiment and keep practicing with your colors. Let yourself go. Study other painters. Look at what they did. Matisse, david park, elmer Bishop...Look and see how they solved the problem of background.

not too much then get a painting knife and trowel it on the canvas..very randomly. then scrape it all off and let it dry for several days. Then paint back over it and allow some of the background to show through. It is fun, it leads to seeing shapes, space, and color, and gives great depth to paintings.

    enjoy!

Do you have to display oil paintings without glass?

I recently purchased an oil painting from Africa. I also purchased a frame from a major art/frame store. Should I display it without the glass or does it matter?Do you have to display oil paintings without glass?
An oil painting has to breathe: no glassDo you have to display oil paintings without glass?
It will look better without the glass.

The most important thing you need to know, though, is that if you insist on framing it WITH glass, the glass must NOT touch the painting itself. If it does, the paint will eventually stick to the glass, and you will never be able to fix that. If you feel you need glass over an oil painting, there must be a separation of at least 1/4'; between the glass and the paint film. I'll bet the frame you bought didn't have separators with it. That's because they usually have to be made by hand, by the framer.

So you see, it's much easier all around to frame it without the glass, and just use the glass for something else.
oil paintings are almost never covered in glass. Drawings on paper are usually covered in glass because they are more delicate than paintings. To expose the true beauty of the painting, don't use glass. Museums don't use glass for most oil paintings (unless they are especially famous or delicate, but even hundreds of year old paintings are not glassed)
Without the glass. The glass will cause the oils to heat and run. At best it would only cause discolouration.
I've never seen them displayed any other way. If you encase them in glass, the painting could not breathe. Usually, an oil painting is done on canvas, and that needs to be kept aired. You don't want to spoil the painting. Watercolors are what need to be behind glass. It's a hassle, too. I do watercolors.

it is safe either way, but uncovered, an oil painting shows more texture and the techniques used by the artist...if that is a noticeable feature of this work, it would be best without the glass
This is one of those questions where the answer is not really ';yes'; or ';no';. There are some very good points made in the previous posts. Most important, was someone's caution that the paint needs to breathe. Very true, especially if this was recently painted. Some people say that if paint is thick in some places, the paint will still be drying for quite a long time. For this reason, they caution us not to varnish our paintings until the paint has cured for 6 months to 1 year. There are exceptions to this caution. In some museums, we have seen a protective ';covering'; over a painting. My suspicion is that it is not glass, but a non-glare lexan-type of material. This is no doubt, put in place to protect the painting from any mishaps caused by public viewing. The thing to remember, is that with this sort of protective framing, the plastic (or whatever material they use), never actually touches the painting. There are perhaps what we might call ';spacers';, between the protective lexan material, and the painting. Such that, the protective material never touches the painting.

Hope I didn't confuse the issue too much.

I totally agree with someone's post up there, that framing without any protective barrier, allows you to experience (see) the beautiful brush strokes, and the transitions between the shadow and light areas, etc. I don't believe I have ever seen an oil painting in a gallery or home, that has had any protective barrier (glass or acrylic). Only in a Musuem.

Some art conservators (people who specialize in the care and preservation of art work) address the issue of a painting with glass. So, it is indeed an issue that comes up. Here is a typical website, for such an art conservator:

You can continue your search on google, by using combinations of search words such as: conservators recommendations framing paintings...or paintings framed with glass conservation advice.

congratulations on purchasing an original oil painting! With good care, you will enjoy it for many many years to come.
Without the glass. One of the benefits of an original oil (as opposed to a print) is the visible texture, depth, and brush strokes. Glass makes it less visible.
It's up to you. glass will keep it from getting marked up and absorbing dirt and dust. Most oil paintings 'show' better without glass. It depends on how important the picture is to you and which way you think it looks better.

    Hi,

Usually an oil painting is displayed without glass, mainly because an accident can happen and the glass my harm the painting, namely cutting the canvas (if it's on canvas).

Oil paintings under glass are usual seen on museums so that people won't touch them. The use museum/conservation glass which under proper lighting is almost 芦invisible禄.

Opposite to what was said above, conservation glass will also protect from UV. Of course that paintings in museums are under proper conditions. But I'm sure that you won't place your painting in a solarium :-)

    Kind regards,
